I was awarded a national award this past summer for a 4-H Going Global International Exchange. My country of choice was Costa Rica, because I wanted to learn more about small value-added entrepreneurship in the area. I went there for 3 weeks not knowing any Spanish, and living with a family I knew nothing about except their names two days before my flight. I had the most wonderful experience being welcomed into their home on a pineapple plantation, and immersed into the Spanish language, and learning about entrepreneurship in Costa Rica. I am very proud of this accomplishment, because this was the first time I have ever travelled alone internationally or anywhere with a foreign language, or living with strangers in a home full of boys. I not only survived this experience, but I had a tremendous amount of fun, learned a great deal, and gained an extended family.
